New York State Police Issue Over 12,000 Tickets, Arrest 245 Driving While Intoxicated Memorial Day Weekend
During the Memorial Day weekend enforcement campaign in New York State, the New York State Police issued a total of 12,062 tickets, marking an increase from nearly 11,000 tickets issued during the previous year’s campaign. The crackdown focused on DWI, speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and adherence to the Move Over Law, with 245 people arrested for driving while intoxicated. Troopers investigated 774 crashes, including three fatal accidents, and utilized sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols funded in part by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. In the Capital Region alone, 23 DWI arrests were made along with hundreds of tickets for speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and Move Over Law infractions. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of public safety and responsible driving during the busy travel weekend, urging motorists to make safe travel plans. This campaign reflects the state’s continued commitment to reducing impaired and reckless driving and improving roadway safety.
