Global Concerns Over AI in News Production Highlighted by Reuters Institute Report

A report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reveals significant global concern over the use of AI in news production, particularly regarding sensitive topics like politics. Surveys of nearly 100,000 people across 47 countries show that 52% of U.S. respondents and 63% of UK respondents are uncomfortable with AI-generated news. The report highlights a growing distrust of AI in news production, with 59% of respondents expressing worry about false news content online, a three percentage-point increase from last year. Nic Newman, the report's lead author, noted the surprising level of public suspicion about AI’s impact on content reliability and trust. The research also indicates a shift in news consumption preferences, with individuals favoring personalities over traditional news outlets and news organizations facing challenges in maintaining revenue and subscription rates.
