Child Sexual Assault Cases Rise in Malaysia
In 2023, Malaysia reported a 26.5% increase in sexual offences involving children, totaling 1,567 cases compared to 1,239 in 2022. Physical sexual assaults rose by 21.1%, with 1,389 cases recorded, while non-physical sexual offences accounted for 91 cases and child pornography for 67 cases. The Department of Statistics Malaysia also noted a 26.1% increase in children needing care and protection, reaching 8,536 children—primarily girls. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted that children under 18 represent 26.9% of Malaysia's population, amounting to about 9.14 million. These statistics reflect ongoing issues concerning child welfare and protection in the country, indicating a pressing need for enhanced measures. The report serves as a vital tool for assessing the quality of life and well-being of children in Malaysia, in line with UNICEF guidelines.
