Punjab Announces Electricity Subsidy Amid Criticism

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal clashed over Punjab's decision to subsidize electricity for its residents, funded by a Rs45 billion budget cut. Nawaz Sharif, PML-N president, announced a reduction of Rs14 per unit for consumers using up to 500 units in August and September, aiming to alleviate high electricity bills. Kamal criticized this move, arguing it should be nationwide and suggesting the government negotiate with local and public power producers to reduce overall prices. He also highlighted the disparity in treatment between Punjab and other regions, particularly Sindh. PM Shehbaz Sharif praised the relief package, calling it a people-centric initiative.
