Ukraine Tests Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Connectivity
Ukraine has become one of the first countries in the world to successfully test and prepare for the commercial launch of SpaceX-owned Starlink's Direct to Cell satellite technology, which enables communication directly via satellite to regular 4G smartphones without additional equipment. The pilot test, conducted in the Zhytomyr region by Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile operator, and officials including CEO Oleksandr Komarov and Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, demonstrated messaging capabilities between smartphones even where terrestrial networks are unavailable. This technology is particularly vital for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, as it ensures connectivity despite Russian attacks on infrastructure, harsh weather, or power outages, with the main requirement being direct visibility of the sky. Kyivstar and Starlink plan to commercially launch messaging services using this technology in the fourth quarter of 2025, with broader mobile satellite broadband services expected by early 2026. VEON, Kyivstar's parent company, is also pursuing satellite partnerships beyond Ukraine, including with Amazon's Project Kuiper, and has committed substantial investments in Ukraine's telecom infrastructure by 2027. Ukrainian officials emphasize that reliable communication during wartime is a security priority and a key driver behind continuing innovative technology development.
