A 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped on the grounds of a government hospital in Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka, in the early hours of Wednesday. The accused, identified as 25-year-old Irfan, had also come to the hospital for treatment and was arrested after bystanders intervened upon hearing the woman's cries for help. According to police, the assault occurred around 2 a.m. as the woman decided to stay overnight due to the late hour. Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey confirmed that the incident took place on the hospital campus and a case has been registered under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape. This incident has sparked outrage within the medical community, particularly following the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding safety in healthcare facilities. The victim is currently receiving medical care, and an investigation is ongoing.
