Nokia Opens AI-Driven 5G, 6G R&D Campus in Finland

Nokia has inaugurated a new research, development, and manufacturing campus in Oulu, Finland, called the 'Home of Radio,' focused on advancing AI-driven 5G and 6G technologies. The facility brings together around 3,000 experts and integrates the entire product development cycle, including chip design, hardware, software, and patent creation, while also supporting 5G standardization and system-on-chip development. The on-site factory will produce 5G radio and baseband products to ensure secure, Europe-built networks, emphasizing technological sovereignty amid the AI connectivity boom. The campus operates entirely on renewable energy, with surplus heat used to warm approximately 20,000 homes, reflecting Nokia's commitment to sustainability. Finnish President Alexander Stubb highlighted the investment as crucial for Finland and Europe, noting that 5G and 6G networks form the neural network for AI, robotics, and the Internet of Things. Nokia CEO Justin Hotard emphasized Oulu's unique ecosystem, which includes partnerships with universities, startups, and NATO’s DIANA Test Center, facilitating rapid innovation and deployment of wireless technologies.
