BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Faces Suspension, Plans Transfer Amid Eligibility Uncertainty

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is currently facing uncertainty regarding his future after admitting to a violation of the school's honor code that requires abstinence from premarital sex, which could trigger a seven-game suspension. Despite a civil lawsuit accusing Retzlaff of sexual assault being dismissed, the honor code violation still stands, complicating his status with the team. Retzlaff has yet to enter the NCAA transfer portal, and due to new NCAA rules, graduate transfers like him must enter the portal before the window closed in April 2025. There are two main paths for Retzlaff to play in the 2025 season: securing an NCAA waiver to transfer and play immediately or being placed on BYU's Designated Student-Athlete list, which would allow him to enter a special transfer window from July 7 to August 5. However, both options require BYU's cooperation, and the school could deny him placement on the list, potentially forcing him to serve his suspension. Coach Kalani Sitake has expressed support for Retzlaff but emphasized that decisions and statements about the situation are Retzlaff's to make, while the coaching staff prepares the team for all outcomes.
