Paul Skenes Named NL Rookie of the Year
Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been named the National League Rookie of the Year after a stellar first season, finishing with an 11-3 record, a 1.96 ERA, and 170 strikeouts in 133 innings. Skenes received 23 out of 30 first-place votes, totaling 136 points, and is the first starting pitcher to win the award since Jacob deGrom in 2014. Meanwhile, Luis Gil of the New York Yankees claimed the American League honor, narrowly edging out Baltimore's Colton Cowser. This marks the first time since 2011 that both Rookie of the Year awards have gone to pitchers. Skenes, who was the top overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft, quickly made an impact, starting the All-Star Game just two months after his debut. He expressed excitement about the upcoming season and the challenge of proving himself over a full year.
