UK Government Plans New Veterinary Medicine Supply Rules for Northern Ireland from 2026
The UK Government has outlined its approach to ensuring the continued supply of veterinary medicines in Northern Ireland following regulatory changes effective from January 1, 2026. Extensive research involving the pharmaceutical industry concluded that only a small number of critical veterinary medicines with no alternatives are expected to be discontinued, minimizing disruption for vets, farmers, and pet owners. Under the new framework, Marketing Authorisation Holders must be based in Northern Ireland or an EU Member State to market veterinary medicines there, requiring those based in Great Britain to transfer their authorisations accordingly by the end of 2025. Existing veterinary medicines released onto the Northern Ireland market before 2026 may continue to be sold, but new supplies from Great Britain must comply with the Windsor Framework, including batch testing by a qualified person in Northern Ireland or the EU. The Veterinary Medicines Internal Market Scheme will allow vets to source restricted medicines from Great Britain if EU alternatives are not viable due to cost or time, helping to maintain access to essential medicines. Overall, the government expresses confidence that these measures, alongside industry adaptation, will protect animal health and support the livelihoods of farmers and veterinary professionals in Northern Ireland.
