South African Minister Parks Tau Cautiously Optimistic on Resolving 30% US Tariff Dispute
South African Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has expressed cautious optimism about ongoing trade negotiations with the United States following the imposition of 30% tariffs on South African exports by President Donald Trump. The talks focus on resolving the tariff issues, renewing the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), and addressing trade framework proposals submitted by South Africa, with land redistribution and affirmative action policies not being the primary issues. Tau highlighted constructive discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and congressional members, noting progress and the imminent receipt of a revised U.S. draft trade framework text for further consultation. Formal negotiations are expected to begin within weeks, with both sides aiming for a mutually beneficial agreement that could enhance market access and investment. The discussions occur alongside geopolitical tensions, including U.S. pressure on South Africa to withdraw its genocide case against Israel, which faces internal resistance. The South African delegation, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, is also engaging with global leaders at the United Nations General Assembly to advance these trade and investment objectives.
