Haverhill School Committee Member Charged with Assault

Cheryl Ferguson, a 59-year-old member of the Haverhill School Committee, has been charged with indecent assault and battery against a teenage boy, following an incident reported to have occurred outside a 7-Eleven store. The teenage victim, who was wearing a Halloween mask, alleged that Ferguson groped him from behind and made inappropriate remarks about his body. Ferguson claimed the encounter was a misunderstanding, stating she merely poked the boy's chest while commenting on his costume. She was arraigned and released on personal recognizance, with conditions including a GPS tracking device, a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and no contact with minors. The Vice Chairman of the school committee expressed concern about Ferguson's involvement with minors and indicated that legal counsel would be sought regarding her future on the committee. Ferguson, who was elected in 2023, has a prior criminal history including a DUI and assault charges.
