Man United Midfielder Mainoo Competing with Captain Fernandes for Starting Role

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting position amid the team's ongoing struggles. Mainoo, 20, has yet to feature this season and was an unused substitute in the recent 1-1 draw with Fulham, where United's only goal came from an own goal and Fernandes missed a penalty. Amorim's tactical setup typically employs two central midfielders, and he indicated that while Mainoo sometimes plays alongside Fernandes, at present he must fight for a place in training. The manager made several substitutions in pursuit of a winner against Fulham, including moving Mason Mount from forward to midfield and introducing new striker Benjamin Sesko. Despite these efforts, United's attacking issues persist, with only one goal from open play in four matches since Rasmus Hojlund was dropped. Amorim emphasized the competitive environment at the club, stating that Mainoo's best chance for game time currently appears to be in the upcoming League Cup match against Grimsby.
