Jack Lowden Cast Lead in Apple Berlin Noir Adaptation
Jack Lowden has been cast as the lead detective Bernie Gunther in Apple TV+’s upcoming drama series adaptation of Philip Kerr’s Berlin Noir novels, starting with Metropolis, the final book in the series but set as an origin story in 1928 Berlin. The series, directed and executive produced by Tom Shankland and adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Peter Straughan, will focus on Gunther’s investigations into a serial killer targeting marginalized victims amid a politically turbulent Berlin, just before the rise of the Nazis. Executive producers include Jane Tranter, Dan McCulloch, Ryan Rasmussen for Bad Wolf, and Tom Hanks with Gary Goetzman for PlayTone, with filming scheduled to take place in Berlin. The show highlights Bernie Gunther’s fight for truth in a city of unprecedented freedom and social upheaval, capturing a key moment before the Nazi threat becomes imminent. Kerr completed Metropolis shortly before his death in 2018, making the adaptation both the first and last novel in Gunther’s timeline. This project reunites Lowden with Apple TV+ following his acclaimed role in the Emmy-nominated series Slow Horses.
