The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the owner and manager of the cargo ship Dali, which caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, killing six construction workers and disrupting port operations for months. The lawsuit alleges that improper maintenance of the ship's electrical and mechanical systems led to a power loss, causing it to veer off course and strike a bridge support column. The DOJ seeks to recover over $100 million spent on cleanup and reopening the port, arguing these costs should be borne by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and Synergy Marine Group, not taxpayers. The companies had previously sought to limit their liability, but the DOJ is pushing for full accountability and additional punitive damages. Maryland state officials estimate the bridge rebuild will take four years and cost about $2 billion. Families of the victims have also announced plans to file legal action against the ship's operators, calling for justice and policy changes to protect immigrant workers.
