Scholes: Tonali Best Midfielder; United Missed Chance
Paul Scholes named Newcastle's Sandro Tonali the Premier League's best midfielder, placing him ahead of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo and praising his controlling play and goal threat. He highlighted Tonali's strong form since his £55m move from AC Milan in 2023 and his importance in Newcastle's recent successes, including a Carabao Cup win and Champions League qualification. Scholes also referenced other top midfielders such as Alexis Mac Allister and Bruno Guimarães. Media reported Manchester United explored other midfield targets in the summer of 2025 and did not pursue Tonali despite Italian reports of interest and a potential €100m valuation, a decision commentators say could be regrettable. Scholes told FourFourTwo he would like former teammate Ryan Giggs to galvanise Manchester United and warned that manager Ruben Amorim could be at risk if results do not improve; he has previously mentioned Eddie Howe as a possible replacement in discussions about United's managerial future.
