Fisherman Discovers Well-Preserved Medieval Sword in Warsaw's Vistula River
A fisherman named Andrzej Korpikiewicz discovered a remarkably well-preserved medieval sword in the Vistula River near the Tarchomin district of Warsaw, Poland, during a period of historically low water levels caused by a heatwave. The sword features a preserved blade, a spherical pommel, and a cross-shaped symbol on its grip, which experts speculate might be linked to the Knights Templar or Knights Hospitaller, though any connection remains unconfirmed. Acting responsibly, Korpikiewicz wrapped the sword in wet cloths to prevent deterioration and promptly reported it to heritage authorities as required by Polish law, which states that artifacts over 300 years old belong to the State Treasury. The sword is now in the custody of the Warsaw Conservator of Monuments and the State Archaeological Museum's Metal Conservation Workshop, where specialists are conducting conservation and further study to uncover its origins. Officials noted the Vistula River's shifting channels might have transported the sword downstream, adding to the mystery of its provenance. Authorities praised the find as a major archaeological sensation and emphasized the importance of proper handling and reporting of such discoveries.
