Walnut Creek Celebrates Olympic Gold Medalist Amit Elor

The City of Walnut Creek is hosting a celebration for Olympic gold medalist Amit Elor on September 14 at Civic Park, honoring her historic win as the youngest American wrestler to achieve this feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Elor, who dominated her matches with a 31-2 advantage and did not concede a point in her last three bouts, will participate in a question-and-answer session and photo opportunities with attendees. The event was prompted by a community push after the city initially rejected honoring Elor, reflecting significant local support for the athlete. Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Darling emphasized the importance of Elor's achievement for women in sports, particularly in non-traditional fields. Elor's victory adds her to a roster of Bay Area athletes, including Steph Curry and Katie Ledecky, who have excelled at the Olympics. A separate celebration for basketball player Sabrina Ionescu, another gold medalist from Walnut Creek, is also planned for later this year.
