Russian Drone Strike in Odessa Destroys Akkerman Distillery, Injures Two, Cuts Power to 46,600
A Russian drone attack on Odessa caused injuries to two people and left approximately 46,600 consumers without electricity, with partial restoration of power achieved the following morning. The same region experienced significant damage to the Akkerman Distillery, a major producer of Aznauri brandy, during airstrikes in late September and October, destroying bottling lines, warehouses, and causing a loss of around 250,000 bottles, though no casualties were reported due to timely sheltering of workers. Despite the destruction affecting brandy production, the distillery's wine operations continue, and the company has secured sufficient stock to maintain supply while seeking alternative production facilities. The Akkerman Distillery, employing around 400 people and with an annual capacity exceeding 50 million bottles, is a significant economic contributor, having paid nearly $20 million in taxes in early 2025. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone strike killed Vladimir Leontyev, the Russian-appointed mayor of Nova Kakhovka in the occupied Kherson region, who had been previously charged by Ukraine for collaboration with Russian forces. These events reflect ongoing conflict impacts in southern Ukraine, affecting both civilian infrastructure and industrial facilities.
