Assam to Celebrate Assamese Classical Language Status

Assam will celebrate the recognition of Assamese as a Classical Language with 'Bhasa Gaurob Saptah' from November 3 to 9, 2024, following the Union Cabinet's approval on October 3. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that universities, schools, and civil society organizations will host events honoring Assamese writers and scholars whose contributions date back to the 4th century AD. This celebration acknowledges the cultural and linguistic heritage of Assam and expresses gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this significant recognition. The designation marks Assamese as one of several languages recognized for their historical significance, which must include a substantial body of ancient literature. The week-long festivities will serve to highlight the importance of preserving and promoting the Assamese language. This event follows a formal resolution from the Assam cabinet to commend the Prime Minister for granting this status.
