Anne Arundel County Opens Nonprofit Center at Former Crownsville Hospital

Anne Arundel County has officially opened the Nonprofit Center at Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park, transforming a site with a painful history into a hub for community support and healing. The center, located on the historic Crownsville campus, provides no- and low-cost office space, professional development workshops, and resources to strengthen local nonprofits focused on health, wellness, and community services. Established with county and federal funding, including $3 million secured by Senator Chris Van Hollen, the center is a key part of a broader plan to redevelop the 459-acre property into a mental health care and education hub. The Crownsville Hospital, originally a segregated psychiatric facility known for mistreatment and medical experiments, closed in 2004 and was transferred to county control in 2022. County officials and community leaders emphasize honoring the site's history while fostering collaboration among nonprofits to build a stronger support system for residents. The facility also serves as a symbol of transformation, moving from a dark past toward a future focused on wellness, education, and community connection.
