Virginia Officer Fatally Shoots Woman During Welfare Check

Bodycam footage released by the Fairfax County Police Department captures the shocking moments leading to the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Sydney Wilson during a welfare check on September 16. Officer Peter Liu, a 14-year veteran, was dispatched after concerns were raised about Wilson’s mental state; however, upon his arrival, she initially closed the door and later charged at him with a knife, slashing his face multiple times. Liu retreated and fired three shots, which ultimately resulted in Wilson's death after medical assistance failed to save her. Police Chief Kevin Davis noted that the situation could have escalated further had a mental health co-responder been present, as is typical protocol, but the nearest clinician was occupied with another call. Davis emphasized the inherent risks for both officers and mental health professionals in such scenarios. The incident is currently under investigation, and Officer Liu remains on administrative duty.
