Netflix Acquires Global Catan Rights

Netflix acquired global rights from Asmodee to develop a broad slate of Catan projects across film and television — live-action and animated, scripted and unscripted — with games and other tie-ins also possible. Projects will be produced by Darren Kyman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studio), Guido and Benjamin Teuber, with producers such as Roy Lee attached. Netflix and Asmodee point to Catan’s large reach — more than 40 million copies sold and translations into 40+ languages — and say the game’s strategy and negotiation mechanics offer storytelling potential. The deal follows prior Netflix–Asmodee collaborations and positions Catan as potential franchise material alongside other game and board-game adaptations. Observers and some critics caution the property lacks built-in characters or deep lore, arguing its social and strategic nature could make screen translation challenging. No release dates or detailed project descriptions have been announced yet.
