PVR Inox Sues Maddock Films Over Film Release Shift

Maddock Films cancelled the theatrical release of 'Bhool Chuk Maaf', starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, just one day before its scheduled release, opting instead for a direct-to-digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 16, 2025, citing escalating India-Pakistan tensions and nationwide security concerns. This last-minute decision prompted multiplex chain PVR Inox to file a Rs 60 crore lawsuit against Maddock Films for breach of contract and financial losses, as well as to seek a stay on the film's digital release. PVR Inox argued that the film should adhere to the standard theatrical-to-digital window, while Maddock Films cited national security and piracy risks if the release was delayed further. The legal dispute has sparked industry-wide concerns that bypassing cinemas could become more common, especially when advance bookings are weak. Maddock Films referenced 'force majeure' clauses as a potential legal defense. The Bombay High Court is currently hearing the case, with a final resolution still pending.
