Hertsmere Council Approves Plans for Europe's Largest AI Data Centre

Hertsmere Borough Council in the UK has granted outline planning permission for the DC01UK data centre, expected to be Europe's largest cloud and AI facility, covering up to two million square feet. This decision aligns with the UK government's recent AI Opportunities Action Plan, highlighting the significance of data centres in driving economic growth. The project is projected to have a construction value of £3.75 billion, create 500 skilled construction jobs, and 200 permanent positions afterward, along with approximately 10,900 indirect jobs. While local leaders tout its economic benefits, environmental concerns have been raised regarding its placement on green belt land, with nearly 1,000 objections filed against the project. Councillor Jeremy Newmark emphasized the need to engage with residents as more details emerge, while opponents argue it threatens local green spaces. The project is anticipated to significantly contribute to addressing the UK’s cloud service deficiencies and future demand increases.
