Drone Detection Systems Deployed in NY-NJ

Recent drone sightings over New York and New Jersey have sparked public concern and prompted calls from Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul for federal intervention through advanced drone detection technology. Schumer has specifically urged the Department of Homeland Security to deploy systems like the Robin radar, which uses 360-degree technology to track drones effectively. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the deployment of additional resources to address the issue, although he stated there is no evidence of foreign involvement or threat to national security. Meanwhile, Governor Hochul announced the federal approval of a state-of-the-art detection system, but emphasized the need for further legislative support to expand local and state law enforcement's capabilities against drones. The sightings, which have also temporarily disrupted airport operations, have led to mixed reactions, with some officials suggesting many of the sightings could be lawfully operated manned aircraft. Both state and federal leaders are advocating for the passage of the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act to enhance drone response capabilities.
