‘Tiny Desk’ Producer Confirms Show Continues After CPB Federal Funding Cuts
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced it is shutting down after Congress and President Donald Trump eliminated its federal funding, a move that threatens over 1,500 local public radio and TV stations, including NPR. Despite the CPB's closure, Bobby Carter, longtime producer and host of NPR's popular Tiny Desk concert series, reassured fans that the show will continue and is not shutting down. Carter emphasized the importance of supporting public media and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. NPR, which receives only about 1% of its operational funding from the federal government, relies primarily on corporate sponsorships, programming fees, and donations; however, the broader public broadcasting ecosystem, especially rural stations, faces severe challenges due to the funding cuts. NPR has filed a lawsuit challenging the government's decision to pull CPB's funding, while CPB plans to wind down operations by September 2025, leading to layoffs and uncertainty for many stations. Tiny Desk continues to expand its reach, recently launching a new weekly show, Tiny Desk Radio, demonstrating resilience amid the public media funding crisis.
