64 Dead in D.C. Plane and Helicopter Collision
A tragic collision between an American Airlines plane and a US Army Blackhawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport resulted in no expected survivors among the 64 individuals onboard both aircraft. The incident claimed the lives of numerous figure skaters, including members of the U.S. Figure Skating team and Russian-born former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who were returning from a National Development Camp and the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. At least 28 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River, with rescue efforts transitioning to recovery due to the lack of expected survivals. The U.S. Figure Skating community expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims' families. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash, though officials indicate no immediate communication breakdown occurred prior to the collision.
