Chicago Pools, Beaches Extended Amid Heat Wave

The Chicago Park District will keep 19 neighborhood pools, 22 beaches, and one inland beach open through Labor Day in response to ongoing heat waves and increased vulnerability to extreme heat. This marks the first time the Chicago Heat Vulnerability Index has been used to prioritize pool locations in high-risk areas. Phased closures begin August 10 with 15 pools closing, followed by 42 more on August 17 as nearly 70% of the seasonal lifeguard staff, primarily students, return to school. All indoor pools are expected to reopen with modified fall hours on September 2, pending maintenance. The Park District has increased lifeguard wages and recruitment efforts to address staffing shortages. The plan reflects efforts to balance public health, student employment, and operational logistics during a period of high temperatures.
