Over 40 Killed in RSF Attack on Sudan Darfur Displaced Camp
At least 40 people were killed in an attack on the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people in Sudan's western Darfur region, carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to multiple aid groups and eyewitness reports. The camp, home to over 200,000 mainly non-Arab residents including Fur and Zaghawa communities, has been caught in crossfire amid intensified fighting between the RSF and Sudanese army allies, with El-Fasher city—the last government stronghold in Darfur—under siege. Satellite imagery from the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab confirmed the presence of around 40 vehicles in the camp's northwest, supporting claims of a northern-origin attack, and videos allegedly show RSF fighters shooting fleeing civilians while using ethnic slurs. The RSF, originating from the Janjaweed militia accused of genocide, has been widely condemned for ethnic cleansing in Darfur, though it denies these charges, calling the conflict tribal in nature. The ongoing war, which began in April 2023, has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 12 million people, and led to extreme food shortages and famine warnings in besieged areas like El-Fasher. Humanitarian groups highlight the dire conditions, noting families are surviving on animal feed and food waste as staple food prices have skyrocketed due to blockades and disrupted supply routes.
