Graeme Smith Critiques ILT20 for Local Investment

Graeme Smith, commissioner of South Africa's SA20 league, criticized international leagues like the UAE's ILT20 for their reliance on foreign players and lack of investment in local cricket. He expressed concern that such structures, which allow for up to nine international players per team, do not support the development of homegrown talent, which he believes is vital for the sport's future. In contrast, SA20 adheres to an IPL-style model permitting only four international players, emphasizing the importance of nurturing local players. Smith stated that the SA20's goal is to benefit South African cricket and has implemented grassroots programs to discover new talent. He highlighted that SA20 is gaining recognition as one of the top leagues outside the IPL, attracting players due to its competitive nature and good crowds. Smith’s comments come as the SA20 and ILT20 seasons are set to overlap once again.
