India's aviation sector is accelerating its digital transformation with the expansion of the Digi Yatra system, which uses facial recognition technology for seamless, contactless travel. Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, launched Digi Yatra at nine additional airports, including Visakhapatnam, Patna, Raipur, Bhubaneswar, Goa (Dabolim), Indore, Ranchi, Coimbatore, and Bagdogra. Since its initial launch in December 2022, the system has been popular, with over 30 million users and 5.3 million app downloads. The government plans to increase the number of airports in the country from 157 to 400 in the next 25 years and introduce seaplane and heliport networks. The Digi Yatra initiative aims to enhance airport efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve passenger experience, while ensuring robust data protection by deleting passenger information within 24 hours of travel. The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) will also be extended to boost airport connectivity further.
