Investigation Launched Into French Transport Minister

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot is under investigation by the National Financial Prosecutor's Office for alleged embezzlement of public funds and related offenses, following a report from the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life in July 2021. The inquiry focuses on his roles between 2018 and 2020, particularly his positions within a tourism and cultural public interest group and as a communications officer for the municipality of Le Cannet, which was governed by his sister at the time. A search of Tabarot's home and offices was conducted in November 2022 as part of the ongoing investigation. Despite the serious allegations, Tabarot maintains he has “nothing to reproach himself for,” asserting that his earnings were properly declared and transparent. The investigation has intensified pressure on Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's government, which is already facing challenges in passing the budget. Tabarot's recent appointment to the government complicates the situation further amid the unfolding scrutiny.
