Universal Enlists Craig Brewer to Direct Snoop Dogg Biopic
Universal Pictures has appointed director Craig Brewer, known for music-centric films such as Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, to direct a biopic about the rapper Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. Brewer will revise a screenplay originally written by Joe Robert Cole, and the film is produced by Snoop Dogg himself alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. This project marks the first film under Death Row Pictures' expanded partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, representing the brand's strategic evolution from music into cinematic storytelling. The biopic aims to chronicle Snoop Dogg's rise from rap superstar to entertainment mogul and is part of Universal's continued investment in hip-hop cinema, following the successes of Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile. Casting is underway, with the production seeking a newcomer to portray Snoop Dogg, and filming is expected to begin soon. Additionally, Snoop Dogg will return as a coach on NBC’s The Voice and continue collaborating with NBCUniversal across various platforms.
