Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Cacique Jose Sierra Sr. Dies at 81
Cacique José G. Sierra Sr., the spiritual leader of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and a lifelong advocate for the Tigua people's traditions and welfare, passed away peacefully at his home on August 16, 2025, at the age of 81. Sierra held numerous leadership roles throughout his life, including governor, tribal judge, sheriff, and mayordomo, and was instrumental in establishing important community assets such as the Tigua Indian Cultural Center, the Tigua Spice Plant, and the Tigua Indian Housing Community. As cacique since 2017, he led the Pueblo’s spiritual life, upheld cultural ceremonies, and successfully achieved a U.S. Supreme Court ruling affirming the tribe’s gaming rights, along with developing healthcare and educational facilities. His impact extended beyond the Pueblo through his work as a location scout, bringing regional landmarks to film, and his role as a cultural ambassador who met celebrities and dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II. The community and local leaders, including El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego and tribal Governor Michael Silvas, mourn Sierra’s passing and recognize his legacy as a guardian of Tigua traditions and a unifying figure for the Pueblo and the broader El Paso community. Funeral services were held on August 25 and 26, with the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center closing in his honor during the ceremonies.
