China Plans to Lift Sanctions on EU Lawmakers, Reviving Investment Talks

China is preparing to lift sanctions on several Members of the European Parliament, a move widely seen as an effort to revive the frozen Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) with the European Union. The sanctions, originally imposed in retaliation for EU measures over human rights concerns in Xinjiang, had barred five MEPs from entering China. Discussions between Chinese officials and the European Parliament are reportedly in their final stages, with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expected to brief group leaders once a formal announcement is made. This step is interpreted as a goodwill gesture from Beijing, aiming to reopen dialogue on trade and investment amid growing economic pressures from recent US tariffs on Chinese goods.
