TSA, CLEAR Launch Biometric eGates at US Airports Ahead of 2026 World Cup
In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and increased travel demand, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and CLEAR have launched biometric automated border control eGates at select U.S. airports including Atlanta, Washington National, and Seattle-Tacoma. These eGates enable CLEAR+ members to bypass traditional manual identity checks by using biometric verification such as facial recognition or fingerprints, allowing travelers to proceed directly to physical screening, significantly reducing wait times. CLEAR is funding this rollout at no cost to taxpayers as part of a public-private partnership aimed at modernizing airport security infrastructure and improving traveler experience amid surging passenger volumes. The system integrates TSA security protocols, with TSA retaining full operational control including gate access and security vetting, while CLEAR processes limited biometric data without access to watchlists or gate override. The pilot program will expand to additional airports to enhance efficiency and hospitality, supporting major upcoming events including America's 250th anniversary. This initiative signifies a broader TSA shift towards embracing biometric technology to streamline airport security while maintaining safety standards.
