South Africa New Vehicle Sales Surge to 10-Year High in September 2025
South Africa's new vehicle market reached a decade-high in September 2025, with sales hitting 54,700 units, a 24.3% increase year-on-year and the highest volume since 2015. This growth is attributed to easing consumer inflation, stable fuel prices, lower interest rates, and a stronger rand, which helped improve affordability especially in small-car and entry-level segments. Imports, particularly from China and India, brought more affordable models that shifted consumer preferences toward value rather than brand prestige. Domestic new vehicle sales in the first half of 2025 rose 14% compared to the previous year, and industry leaders expect 2025 sales to surpass pre-pandemic levels for the first time in five years. Despite some segments showing mixed performance, dealer confidence remains strong, with rental and fleet sales also contributing significantly. However, affordability remains a key consideration amid ongoing budget pressures for households.
