A series of cyber scams have emerged in Pune and surrounding areas, with victims losing significant sums of money. A 40-year-old woman was duped of Rs 20 lakh by fraudsters posing as Mumbai police officers, who threatened her with imprisonment and secured an instant loan in her name under duress. In another incident, a private company was scammed out of Rs 40.61 lakh when an employee was tricked into transferring funds after receiving a deceptive message from someone impersonating the company’s CEO. The Deccan Gymkhana police have filed an FIR in this case, as the con involved convincing the finance team through a fake text message. Additionally, a retired crime branch inspector fell victim to a similar scheme, losing Rs 1.29 lakh to cyber criminals claiming he was owed money from abroad. These incidents highlight the increasing sophistication of cyber scams in the region.
