UK Treats Coercive Control as Domestic Abuse Crime
Recent legislative changes in England and Wales have elevated the treatment of coercive control to be on par with other forms of domestic abuse, reflecting a significant shift in how offenders are managed. Under the new law effective from Monday, offenders sentenced to 12 months or more for coercive or controlling behavior will now automatically fall under multi-agency public protection arrangements (Mappa), which aims to reduce reoffending rates. This approach has been supported by research indicating that individuals managed under Mappa demonstrate a reoffending rate significantly lower than the national average. Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips emphasized the importance of recognizing the harm caused by all forms of domestic abuse and ensuring serious offenders are properly managed. Additionally, a new strategy in Northern Ireland aims to address domestic and sexual abuse comprehensively, focusing on societal involvement and support for victims. The strategy highlights collaboration and inclusivity, recognizing that anyone can be a victim of abuse, irrespective of gender or background.
