International Court of Justice Rules on Ukraine-Russia Genocide Case

News summary

The International Court of Justice has ruled that parts of Ukraine’s case against Russia can move forward, including assessing whether Ukraine committed genocide in the eastern parts of the country. The ICJ also recognized its jurisdiction in the case of Ukraine against Russia for genocide. Ukraine brought the case to the UN International Court of Justice days after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Although the case revolves around the 1948 Genocide Convention, Kyiv does not accuse Moscow of committing genocide in Ukraine. Instead, they say that Russia violated the genocide agreement by justifying the invasion as necessary to stop the alleged genocide of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine.
