Mets Honor Mays and Grote with Patches

The New York Mets will honor the late Jerry Grote and Willie Mays with commemorative patches on their uniforms for the rest of the season. Grote, who passed away in April, was a two-time All-Star and crucial to the Mets' 1969 World Series win, while Mays, who died on June 18, concluded his Hall of Fame career with the Mets in 1973. The patches, featuring Mays' No. 24 and Grote's No. 15, were unveiled during the Mets' game against the Houston Astros. This tribute follows an already existing patch for Bud Harrelson, another Mets Hall of Famer who died in January. Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen expressed their grief over losing these iconic players and emphasized their lasting legacies. Both families of the players appreciated the gesture, highlighting the deep connection and impact these athletes had on the team and New York City.
