Prairie View A&M Fires Head Coach Bubba McDowell

Prairie View A&M University has decided not to renew the contract of head football coach Bubba McDowell, ending his three-year tenure with a 17-18 overall record and a 14-10 mark in SWAC play. McDowell, who ascended to head coach in 2022 after serving as defensive coordinator, faced a challenging 2024 season marked by a key quarterback injury and difficulties on both lines, culminating in a fourth-place division finish with a 5-7 record. Despite leading the team to a SWAC West title in 2023, the Panthers' recent struggles and a series of disappointing losses contributed to the decision. Athletic Director Anton Goff commended McDowell for his commitment to student-athletes but emphasized the need for new leadership to elevate the program. Assistant Head Coach Ashton Green will serve as interim head coach while the university conducts a national search for McDowell's replacement. The decision coincides with administrative changes following the appointment of Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande as university president and Anton Goff as athletic director.
