Massachusetts transportation officials are warning drivers to expect major delays on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Boston due to a significant bridge replacement project at the I-90/I-95 interchange in Newton and Weston. Starting Friday, May 30 at 9 p.m. through Monday, June 2 at 5 a.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between exits 123 and 125 to allow crews to replace the I-90 bridge over the MBTA railroad. A second weekend of lane closures will occur from June 20 to June 23. The project is part of a $400 million effort to replace or rehabilitate eight bridges at the interchange. Commuter rail service on the MBTA’s Framingham/Worcester line will be replaced by buses during these weekends, adding to travel disruptions. Officials urge drivers to avoid the area if possible, leave extra travel time, and aim to reduce traffic through the zone by 50% to keep delays manageable.
