Migrants drown in Panama
Ten migrants drowned in a river while attempting to cross the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia, according to Panamanian authorities. The bodies were discovered near the Carreto community, with the National Border Service noting that the drownings likely occurred during the dangerous rainy season. More than half a million migrants crossed the treacherous terrain of the Darien last year, with the majority being Venezuelans seeking to reach the United States. The current migration crisis has prompted the Panamanian government to enhance border security and seek international assistance. New measures, including closing certain jungle paths and establishing a 'humanitarian corridor,' have been implemented to manage migrant flows and protect them from organized crime. However, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has criticized these closures, warning they could exacerbate migrant risks.
