HD Hyundai Launches Warship Project in Peru

On January 10, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and Peru's SIMA Shipyard commenced the Peru Warship Project, marking a significant step in South Korea's defense exports to Latin America. The project encompasses the construction of four naval vessels, including a frigate, offshore patrol vessel, and amphibious landing ship, with deliveries set to begin in 2026. This initiative is backed by a defense contract worth approximately KRW 640.6 billion, awarded in April 2024, and is part of the Korean government's 'Team Korea' strategy aimed at expanding K-defense globally. The launch ceremony was attended by prominent Peruvian officials, including President Dina Boluarte, who emphasized the project's importance for modernizing the Navy and boosting economic growth. Joo Won-ho from HD HHI highlighted the commitment to technological excellence and strengthening defense ties between Korea and Peru. The project is considered a milestone in Peru's shipbuilding industry and a model for future collaborations.
