London Mayor Khan Plans Pedestrianisation of Oxford Street by 2027

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has announced plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street, backed by strong public support with around two-thirds of Londoners in favour according to multiple surveys. The pedestrianisation will cover a 0.7-mile stretch between Oxford Circus and Marble Arch, with potential further extensions towards Tottenham Court Road, aiming to transform the area into a world-class, accessible shopping and leisure destination. The initiative, costing approximately £150 million, is expected to be phased and could take until 2027 or beyond to complete, with detailed traffic proposals to be consulted on later this year. The plan has gained support from major retailers like Selfridges, John Lewis, and Ikea, and is seen as a means to boost economic growth, job creation, and attract more international visitors. The project requires the approval of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who has expressed strong backing for the scheme, with the intention to establish a Mayoral Development Corporation by January 2026 to oversee implementation.
