Suspect Arrested in University of Arizona Shooting

Ryan Romero-Encinas, 20, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of Minhaj Jamshidi, a 19-year-old Pima Community College student, on the University of Arizona campus. The incident occurred late on September 22 near the volleyball courts after a fight broke out, with Jamshidi succumbing to his injuries at the scene. Police Chief Chris Olson emphasized the need for community involvement in addressing gun violence, which he noted is not solely a policing issue. Romero-Encinas was apprehended three days after the shooting, having turned himself in following a public tip. He is not a student at the University of Arizona, and the circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear. Jamshidi had recently immigrated from Afghanistan, highlighting the personal tragedy behind the violence.
