Emergency Crews Rescue Dogs Trapped in Boston, New York Transit Systems
Two separate pet rescues drew attention in the past week: a small dog trapped in an escalator at Harvard MBTA Station on Oct. 18 was freed by Cambridge firefighters and taken with its owner to an emergency veterinarian, with injuries described as not life‑threatening and officials warning that “escalators are unforgiving.” In New York, a small dog named Moose slipped away and ended up under a northbound 2 train at the 14th Street station on Oct. 23, where officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Service/Special Ops units climbed onto the tracks and, as captured on bodycam, coaxed and carried the frightened pup to safety after it had been struck and then sheltered beneath a car. Transit and police personnel reunited Moose with his owners on the platform amid cheers, and authorities reported no serious injuries to the dog. Bodycam and bystander video of the Manhattan rescue were widely shared, underscoring both the risks pets face around trains and the rapid response by emergency crews. Both incidents prompted reminders from officials to use extra caution with pets (and children) near escalators and subway tracks.
