REAL ID Enforcement Starts Wednesday, Long DMV Waits Expected in Multiple States
The federal REAL ID enforcement deadline arrives Wednesday, requiring U.S. domestic air travelers and visitors to federal buildings to present a REAL ID-compliant card marked with a star, or alternatively use a valid passport or similar federal identification. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) warns that travelers without a REAL ID or other accepted documents should expect longer wait times and additional screening, with recommendations to arrive at airports at least three hours early. The surge in demand has resulted in long lines at DMVs, especially in major states such as Illinois, New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Washington, though individuals not traveling immediately can wait to apply. The law, passed in 2005 following recommendations from the 9-11 Commission, aims to prevent fraud and enhance security, but nationwide compliance remains incomplete, with many states still under 70% compliant. Extended hours at some DMV locations and special Real ID centers are helping manage the rush, and mobile driver’s licenses will also be accepted once enforcement begins. Those under 18 or with valid passports, military IDs, Green Cards, or Global Entry cards are exempt from the new requirement for air travel.
